Aitomus, is a study, a response to the hostile environment of society which seeks to eradicate the existence of trans and nonbinary people. Aitomus is an old Finnish word meaning ”an animal always fleeing its paddock”. This sentiment continues my exploration of escapism to nature, to the countryside – the juxtaposition of an adult who felt stifled in the countryside while growing up but yearns to return there, enjoying the solitude from society’s expectations but recognises the importance of community, which is still lacking, desiring to cultivate this escapism to something productive.
The book includes Finnish and English versions of the same text, which is written in a poetic form. It explores nature’s bodily characterisations and the emotions invoked by the societal climate. I aspire to expand on this dialogue by including 35mm photography to respond to the text. The photography is a collection of pieces I’ve taken of my childhood village from 2018 to 2025.
