Särö – sound installation continues my ongoing critical research and experimentation within the Finnish identity relating to queerness. Translated to English, Särö means distortion. In this work, I explore the distorted nature of my own Finnish identity as a nonbinary and queer artist due to the still heavy censorship of Queer history, which dates to the national romanticism era, “the golden age of art”, in Finland during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

I use the UK, EU and US passport photo specs to showcase analogue photography of the frozen lake desperately trying to refreeze while the manufactured stream for the “avanto” forcefully makes it impossible, thus distorting its nature.

I play with this notion of distortion within the sound piece, in which I use recordings of the same frozen lake as pictured in the photo, thus tying the sound and the images to one location. I mix the original sounds of the frozen lake with distorted and manipulated ones, layering and reversing, with ambitions of creating a storyline without narration of the continuous struggle of self-acceptance within a society that still treats you as a deviant.
